Hello, I had to re-install MySql ; I copied the backuped server files over the existing installation directory ; the datadir is correct ; the my.ini file in %windir% is correct, and nevertheless the server refuses to start. Why ?

Hello, there are various possibilities for this error to occur. grossly, the MySql server hasn't started. Now you've to help us determine WHY it hasn't started.

You've to look into the .ERR file that the server generated upon startup. Look into your installation directory (as per the online documentation) or, better IMHO, directly in your ~datadir

it's named %servername%.err

what's in there ?

strangely enough, I found THAT in the .ERR file :

060515 7:53:05 Fatal error: Can't open privilege tables: Incorrect information in file: '.\mysql\user.frm'

I just installed the same ySql as before !?! Is this a OLD_PASSWORD() issue ? Do I hav to run fix_privilege_tables ? ;-)

I'm ***pretty sure*** you DOWNGRADED MySql !!!

By any unluck, didn't you have installed MySql 5.x on your system ? And now, aren't you installing a MySql 4.x on it ? ;-)

If this is the case, re-install (overwrite files from the ZIP) the 5.x server and everything should be FINE.
