Operating Systems :: Windows :: UNABLE 2 DELETE FILE

Hello,

this ocurrence is very strange, wanted to delete a folder that had just been copied into the system but cannot do it. Actually, all files got deleted except
a .DLL file. I entered command.exe (START->RUN->CMD) and did check disk

:> chkdsk /F /V

At 6% checking, it stopped. I later scheduled checking of disk after restart but it still got to 6% index checking and could not go further.

Anyone knows what might be wrong or a way out?

ok, first when you open "cmd.exe" you're NOT at a true "DOS level". You're still on windows...

the DLL is probably in use, or the file entry is uneraseable (it happened to me, too)

you could first reboot on DOS (Win98 bootdisk, search on google if you don't have one ;-) and then try todelete the file - provided it's not on an NTFS partition, of course ;-)

if all else fails, you lost your ability to delete the file. Live with it. Or rename the directory to "_bad" name and create a new one.

I doubt this indicates a failing disk drive, but it's also a possibility. There are various test disk utilities that you can also find on google (one is called "testdisk" if I'm not mistaken).

good luck...
