my sugegstion is a no-go. Use the MySql console. You've 100% control over what you do and no GUI to bother you.
it was the 0,30 euro thought of the day :D

I strongly reccomend phpMyAdmin Yes, it's a web based GUI
that simplifies matters greatly, but it also lets you see
the queries used, and lets you create/edit your own queries so you'll learn as you use it, (at least I did).

Webmin also has a pretty slick GUI for MySQL (and almost everything else) It's at <A HREF="http://www.webmin.com">http://www.webmin.com</a>

I also recommend phpMyAdmin, I use it all the time and it's a great help, quick and easy to use.
It also has great feedback of your SQL queries, editing/inserting is easy. Overall a great way to learn, and easily develop your SQL

New addition : since one year, I use now a script I made that enabled me to enter SQL queries, keep an history list of them, perform non-standard DB operations, on MySql, SQL-Server and Oracle at the same time.

It's available on my server in "free third party tools" at http://www.edainworks.com

have fun
