I'm going to create a medium database with over 10.000.000 entries. I'd like to use MySQL. As i've never created a DB of this size, i have some very general questions:

1) How to keep performance ~100%
2) What kind of computer is needed to smootly run this database (RAM, CPU, HDD - raid/not, ...)
3) Improve speed.
4) Split the thing up into peaces or leave it in one single table? (it looks to me that splitting up is the best option)
5) Other important issues (if you see something important that i don't at the moment ;)

As said, these are very general questions. It's not necessary to give in-dept analysis on how to create a top-class database. I just need to know where to look for answers to (novice) questions and what to remember when writing an application to use this DB.

Thanks in advance!

1) dedicate the machine to database serving
2) best ram and cpu you can afford - it's not that important, but 7200rpm disks and RAID [THIS improves speed!]
3) RAID, RAID, RAID 0+1 or 5
4) to me too, especially "pushing aside" old data while letting clients access it. But only time will tell. It'll always be time to implement the splitting later, when you've no other choice
5) have fun 8-)
