Operating Systems :: Unix :: Apache visbility over LAN

Hi, I'm a beginner to Linux and Apache, but with much experience in Win NT/2K servers and IIS. I recently installed RedHat 7.2 and Apache 1.3 on a server on our LAN. The IP of the server is 192.168.1.100

The default site can be viewed from the host server on <A HREF="http://localhost">http://localhost</a>, <A HREF="http://192.168.1.100">http://192.168.1.100</a> and 127.0.0.1 yet is not visible on 192.168.1.100 from any other machine on the LAN. This IP pings successfully.

I tried adding Listen 192.168.1.100:80 to httpd.conf, which caused the site to only be visible on the host on 192.168.1.100, but still not available over the LAN.

Any help would be much appreciated, this is driving me up the wall, thanks in advance

did you enable the firewall when you were installing
redhat?

if not sure, run these commands and post the output (as root)

ipchains -l
iptables -L
ifconfig -a

and in the httpd.conf file, what are the values for

BindAddress
NameVirtualHost

anything that looks weird in the logs? check these files

/var/log/messages
/var/log/httpd/access_log
/var/log/httpd/error_log

im sorry im asking questions rather than providing an
answer, but i dont have enough info to go on

What is the exact error you get:
404 not found?
505 cannot perform operation?
permission denied?
are you just trying to view the default apache page(html)?

Hi. I don't know about the firewall, I just went for the default install settings. The error i get is "Cannot Find Server", and I am trying to access the default apache "welcome" page

ipchains -L
Chain input (policy ACCEPT):
target propt opt source destination ports
ACCEPT all ------ anywhere anywhere n/a
REJECT tcp -y---- anywhere anywhere any -> 0:1023
REJECT tcp -y---- anywhere anywhere any -> nfs
REJECT udp ------ anywhere anywhere any -> 0:1023
REJECT udp ------ anywhere anywhere any -> nfs
REJECT tcp -y---- anywhere anywhere any -> x11:6009
REJECT tcp -y---- anywhere anywhere any -> xfs
Chain forward (policy ACCEPT):
Chain output (policy ACCEPT):

iptables -L
lots of errors, Device or resource busy etc.. Says Perhaps iptables or your kernel needs to be upgraded

ifconfig -a (as ifconfig)
eth0 - gives IPs, UP usual info, all accurate and working

in httpd.conf
BindAddress and NameVirtualHost are both commented out

There's nothing in the logs which coincides with the time of any access attempts, only from local accesses, which are all fine

I can post the entire info if you want, but it's quite long to type in. Thanks again

check the settings of your LAN clients for intranet access
deactivate ipchains for a test

VGR, thanks, it was the firewall. stopped ipchains and it worked straight away. Looks like I'll have to read my linux firewalls book after all.

Incidentally, the LAN was fine, i've got 2 NT/2K web servers on the LAN which are fine.

If you can suggest a quick way to allow the 192.168.*.* range on port 80 with ipchains that would be great.

Thanks again

I figured out the ipchains to allow http, thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
