| my guesses : nowadays : declinaisons of Ubuntu ? (kubuntu, xubuntu etc) freeBSD is probably the most "unix feeling" and most "secure" a Mandrake is a good shot too, if you can't get your hend on an old Red Hat |

| in case you wonder about some distributions, ask me. Just in case I could know them ;-) this said, for students if the objective is to hide the OS, then a *ubuntu or mac OS X are perfect. They look like windaube. if it's for leraning working with real compilers and real OS commands, then any distribution will do. in fact, the best rule I could give you is - and I think it's a good one - try to match the dsitribution with the HARDWARE it will run on. NEVER install an old distribution on newest hardware : calling for trouble... if you've an old machine, say 2 years old, try to find the first (=oldest) distribution that fully supports it so that you don't "fill in" your hard drive for nothing. |
