I find the Oracle UNION quite slow. Any idea why ?

Probably a missing index... Try to EXPLAIN PLAN.

You can also speed up the overall query by splitting it into the individually unioned ones and managing the dataset yourself in your front-end program or script. This is an especially spectacular improvement in performance, unless you wanted to do a UNION and not a UNION ALL.
