i use octopus for collecting data in my network.
some workstations are responding, some not. why?
firewall is off...
where should i look?

octopus= soft for management IT departament tasks.

more info: i receive an error message: "connection error: RPC error (the computer's rpc service is not enabled or the computer blocks rpc calls by means or firewall)"

- but rpc is running,
- firewall is off,
- and of cource... the machine is responding to ping...

yes, I know what is a network management tool. Pytheas management series2 is the true name of octopus, AFAIK. I was just asking for confirmation :-)

now your problem :
-first are the non-responding machines all of a given style (some windows version ? linux ? etc)
-haven't you exceeded the licensed maximum number of workstations per server ?
- are the non-responding machines always the same ? Or are they the ones rebooted/logged in the last ? the first ? at random ?

2. I have licence on workstations not limited by server.
3. I have same machine type and windows on workstations who some are working and some are not working.
4. now I will make a surveillance for few days. to see if they are the same...
