Bonjour Sir,

I later saw that the system had a bad internal speaker. That resolved but here is another.

I connected 2 laptops with a cross-over cable (Cat 5 UTP) wanting to share resources.
I did d following
1. restarted d pcs
2. checked TCP/IP, File sharing, Client 4 Microsoft Network Options
3. Set IP address of pc1 to 192.168.0.1 and the other 192.168.0.2 and had Internet Firewall on, on 2 pcs.
4. Both pcs show connected (i.e. the Lan icon for the NIC in internet explorer)

pinging pc2 from pc1 (ping 192.168.0.2) gives a reply of data but pinging pc1 from pc2 (ping 192.168.0.1) gives REQUEST TIMED OUT.

Changed the ends of the cable but suprisingly saw dat pinging one fro the other constantly gave REQUEST TIMED OUT.

Was slightly het-up but took courage to disable firewall on both pcs but both computers shouted DESTINATION HOST UNREACHABLE on pinging each other. I am suspecting a bad cable but I would kndly like U to help me out.

it should work... the easiest way to do it now is to install an FTP server on the reacheable PC (192.168.0.2) like WarFTPd and an FTP client on the other one, like FTPExpert. Communication will then be both ways. You can even re-eable the "firewall" (I hope it's NOT the infamous "XP Firewall" you're talking about :D ) given you authorize the port used for your FTP connections. If your two machines stay disconnected from Interneuneu, let it be port 21 ; if not : you could change the port (whatever you like, as 2133) ; don't forget to disable guest access, to create a named account with a password and to give it correct file access rights.

That's the quick and clean solution.

If you want to reach other computers via MS networking, you'll probably need :
- to ensure both machines have the same "WORKGROUP" in workstation/properties
- to install the NetBEUI protocol on both NICs
