Hello, I just had to re-install Win2K, and following the normal installation procedure I got anyway "NTLDR manquant" ; after some rebbots I got "NTLDR missing". Why is that ? What can I do about it ? |

| Hello, according to Microslop itself, this can have multiple causes. 1) your system partition is formatted FAT32 and you try to upgrade from Win95/98 on a large disk (partition > 7,8GB and system identifier 0C in partition table) and the BPB is incorrect about the head value. -> in this case you've to correct the head value. I suggest using the TestDisk program (is delivered on bootable diskette) 2) your system may have defective hardware. -> in this case, try to run first a MemTest86+ to sort out the most incapacitating error of all : defective RAM. -> then try to run any hardware diagnostic software provided with your motherboard 3) Windows install failed and you want to try it manually. -> there is a solution. You've to start the Windows installation CD (yes, I know this is slooooowwww) ; don't forget F6 if you need RAID drivers or such ; ask for "repair" and "recuperation console" -> you should see kind-of a DOS prompt. You can't do much in there (not even a CHKDSK ;-) but you can copy files from the installation CD, directory ./i386 , and see the files automatically uncompressed. -> copy the files NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM -> don't forget to check that you have a valid BOOT.INI hidden file at the system disk's root -> restart good luck ;-) |

| Other ways of trying to fix : 1) FIXBOOT and FIXMBR in the recuperation console (if you are sure the drive has incorrect boot sector or MBR) [this may be useless except in the most basic error cases] 2- playing with a Win98 bootdisk, SYS c:, and then trying to upgrade again to Win2K [this may work fine] |

| and other probable cause : - your "boot device rder" in the BIOS has changed and you no longer boot on the correct hard disk :D this happens when you add devices, swap disks, activate one, and sometimes for no apparent reason. |
