| Bonsoir l'Afrique ;-) In fact, I think since the 80s that there is only one combination which works to ensure a machine's protection : a signature-based antivirus for eradication, and a resident one to block activation of unknown (ie : new ) threats. Unfortunately, that combination no longer exists since the rise of ZindoZe as a desktop (windowing) environment (so-called "OS"). Moreover, all antiviri are no longer free, and the ones that are (Kasperski?) are also known for vulnerabilities and false alerts (and even strange things like a keyboard no longer working after reboot etc) All antiviral programs are imperfect, this is clear and acceptable, but I also think they are always ***late*** on a threat by construction. They simply can NOT protect you from an unknown-so-far threat. Only remove it some days afterwards (when lucky), after you lost data, sensitive personal data or even the control of your computer who's not a Bot/Zombie (when unlucky). And last, there are lots of possibilities to overcome antiviral programs and firewalls. Perhaps the best and simpliest solution is NOT to use an antivirus, for the reasons exposed above and particularly the last one. Use a firewall (there are at least three free and correct ones, ZoneAlarm, Kerio Personal and an other one I never remember), use open-source tools (to replace the weak combination of Microsoft tools : Outlook, Office, Internet Exploder). My own combination is : Eudora, Open Office and Firefox, but I could just as well use Thunderbird as an email client. Anything but Microsoft sloppy software. Add to this a regular backup of your data on various media. Add also the classical AdAware, HiJackThis! and SypBot Search&Destroy - all free Also re-configure your Windows environment for the dangerous default options ("hide known extensions", "hide system and hidden files", "enable ActiveX" and the like). Or switch to linux. Kubuntu is a straightforward move and it looks like XP anyway. Think that ***even*** Apple now runs a unix distro in stead of its famous MacOS. Add a periodic use of an online antivirus (Trend Micro's House Call) and you should be as happy as I am since years. You should find links on google for the above-referenced tools. Good luck. PS : if you want a fast answer to your question, here it is : use Trend Micro's online antivirus, it's always up-to-date and accessible from anywhere at no cost. |

| I use Avast (free edition) for antivirus. It has been trouble free for the past couple of years and seems to be as effective. I used to use Norton (Symantec). It needed periodic reinstallation and was difficult to reinstall because if it found anything from a previous installation, it would not reinstall. So I went looking for alternatives, found Avast, and have had no problems. Why change? |

| I use AVG by grisoft. They have a free for personal use version and a paid version. They also have versions for servers Windows and Linux. When Norton and Mcaffee conflict with speciality software, I find it does not. It may conflict with isp provided mail scanning software such as earthlink but I just remove earthlinks. | |||
