I have bought a pc without an operating system. The only thing on it is a command.com file from MS-DOS ver 4.00.1111 (normally used together with Win-95 but that OS is removed). My problem is that I can't access the CD-drive from the command prompt and my new OS(Win-98) is on a CD. The only mapped drives are: A: mapped to the only floppy drive B: mapped to the same only floppy drive C: mapped the complete hard drive (no partitions) - How do I get the OS to map to the CD-drive? - Do I need to install a complete version of MS-DOS from a floppy (which I'm not really interested in since I have Win-98 on a CD)? - If I need to install MS-DOS (or something else) to access the CD-drive is there any freeware for this? |

1)get a win98SE boot disk on the Net ; It'll contain many CDROM drive drivers (it was used at the time computers couldn't boot from CD, so the DOS boot on floppy had to recognize the CDROM) This is done classicly via DEVICE= in config.sys and autoexec.bat (letter assignment) 2) no 3) don't know, but DOS will have access once you add to your DOS boot the correct lines in config.sys and autoexec.bat (taken from the floppy, after determining the correct driver for your CDROM drive)

Hi FiatLink, VGR is correct. A Win98 bootdisk would probably be the easiest way to go. You can get one here: http://www.netclan.nl/files/-bootdisk98/boot98se.exe When you run this program, it will ask you to put a disk in the floppy drive. After the program has completed, the floppy you inserted is your new bootdisk. If this takes care of your problem, please accept VGR's answer. I merely gave the link to the disk. monange

prevetative maintenance .... do as they suggested and get a windows 98se boot disk that will allow you to access the cdrom but for future usage do the following so you will naver need to do this again unelss you format ----- DOS commands ---- C: cd\ md windows cd windows md option cd option md cabs cd cabs E: ( this assumes that this should be the logical drive assigned by the windows 98 bootdisk to the cdrom compensating for the windows ramdisk ) cd win98 copy *.* C: ** reboot removing the 98 cd and the bootdisk ** cd windows cd options cd cabs setup this will now run the windows installation form the loca drive and after windows sets up will install the cdrom. The reason I say to do this is you will never be prompted to " insert your windows cd" again you instead will be able to reinstall windows from the command prompt by simply restarting in DOS mode and using the following command cd windows del *.* deltree desktop C:\windows\options\cabs\setup /d /p v the /d bypasses current settings in the system.ini win.ini the /p is a special system mode that opens doors for more swtiches the v is verify and will walk you through registry values to confirm that's what you want to do have fun ;)

most backups on NT4 W2K and XP use the /i386 doler for backups .. NT not as much as the others ... but to execute the install you will still need the cd

I think all you experts who answered deserve some points, but since I have a feeling that it would be complicated to split the points I send the points to the guy who supplied enough info for me to solve the problem. But the other answers were informative as well. Anyway, now my 4 year old daughter sits at her desk playing childrens games thanks to you (and a little bit to me too). As a reward I have grabbed a beer and I think you'll should do the same. You have made one little girl in Sweden really happy! Cheers!
