hi everyone!
i ran into a problem never seen before and not understanding it at all. i installed apache 1.3.27 from source (removed the shipped one completely), the latest php (also from source) and the latest mysql binary distribution (standard, also removed the shipped one completely) for mac os x (all /usr/local/). everything seems to work fine. name of my machine (mac osx 10.2.6) and servername in httpd.conf is spacecadillac. i'm using the latest iE, NS and mozilla releases. here we go! with iE i can't access my webserver at all, neither using spacecadillac, localhost, spacecadillac.local. or 127.0.0.1. with NS and mozilla i'm just able to access it via 127.0.0.1 and with camino, accessing it via spacecadillac works! ahuu? messed something up? i'm relativly new to this, but installed these several times before without running into trouble at all (okay, it always took me a few tries). i'm still learning this stuff, could be that i messed something up (beginners unix systems are always messed up, truuuueee?). someone experienced this before? hey, i'm not asking to help me clean up my system, but the solution may be out there ;)
i'm at work at the moment and my machine's at home, so progress may be slow...

solute!

Step 1. Are you certain that the webserver is running ? Try to telnet to the localhost on port 80, press return a couple of times and you will hopefully get a 400 Bad Request sent back with a little server info.If you do not connect, then the server is not running

hi there! apache, mysql und php seem to run fine, i'm able to use phpMyAdmin and the db and php driven sites in my homefolder, for example. i tried to telnet to 127.0.0.1 80 and spacecadillac 80. both returned "trying 127.0.0.1 \n connected to localhost \ escape character is...". i never had this problem before. what i did was deleting my old apache, my old mysql. the php dist. shipped with osx is still on my disk. i installed the newest releases in /usr/local, as i already did before. at the same time, i installed the newest iE, NS and Mozilla releases, and now i have this problem. iE always says (i'm trying to translate the error message, as i installed the german localization) "error on loading of 'access on url: <A HREF="http://">http://</a>...'. when i'm trying to access my apache by hostname on NS, it wants to connect to info.netscape.com (i don't have an internet connection for the concerned machine at the moment), by ip works. when i'm using camino, accessing the webserver via <A HREF="http://spacecadillac">http://spacecadillac</a> works. what i realized in iE setting was that use webproxy for all is set, and i cannot uncheck it. maybe the problem could also be in the confusing entanglement of os x's netinfo and the bsd configuration files, maybe i messed something up there (don't know if you are familiar with this, the bsd files say that they are used only if booted in single user mode). hmm, but 127.0.0.1 works on netscape and mozilla, and hostname on camino (and camino is the one wich i did not install a new version from). hopefully looking forward to step 2 :)

Sorry buddy I can't give you a step 2 at this moment. Given the successful telnet and the fact that phpmyadmin is there it indicates that you apache server is indeed perfectly. Your issues are pure browser based here, and I do not claim to be an expert at any level. Have this thread deleted and post up something in browser issues.

Best of luck

oh, it's a pity, but thank you very much for your efforts.
strange, isn't it...
btw, is it correct that i use spacecadillac as hostname to connect to mysql, or does mysql need its own hostname? perhaps they must have 2 different names but instead (while configuring it) i thought it has to be the hostname of the machine?

because your requests will go over tcpip and spacecadalic and localhost both resolve to the same address it doesn't really matter. It is a good practice to use an application variale that you code into an include file, that way if you move it you only change the value in the include rather than every procedure call !

I think it's either browser-related (I strongly doubt it if you've problem accessing a phpinfo() page on localhost :D ), or a firewall/proxy/LANsettings issue... if you have problems accessing via different browsers, it ***may*** indicate different browser settings or capabilities in the areas of :
-default gateway (yes, even for 127.0.0.1)
-proxy settings
-"no proxy for..." (usually 127.0.0.1, check this ! )
-etc

Much as you won't want to hear this....I have had similar issues with redhat 6.1. Nothing I did worked. My solution. I rebuilt it. Not the best answer I know but it worked for me:)

here we go!
...it was caused because i disabled my network...now iE works! dumb me...
while every browser could access it with my network disabled, internet explorer could not. ahu?
but still funny, with netscape i'm only able to access my apache by 127.0.0.1. well, i can live with that for the moment...
in netscape, regardless of choosing "direct connection to the internet" or manual proxy configuration with entering the locations not to use a proxy for, it's just possible accessing it via <A HREF="http://127.0.0.1">http://127.0.0.1</a>.
something funny in iE as well, if i uncheck "use webproxy for all", afterwards it's always checked again. also, the field for entering locations not to use proxy for is not editable, regardless of the other settings. i had a look at the previous iE release for os x, exactly the same there.
looks like we have a draw on points! this is split on fz2hqs and vgr.
charlieroker, you may fetch 20 from <A HREF="http://www.experts-exchange.com/Web/Web_Languages/PHP/Q_20674070.html">http://www.experts-exchange.com/Web/Web_Languages/PHP/Q_20674070.html</a> for having such a bad luck ;)

thx guys,
ojay
